Angels acquire Teixeira for Kotchman
Baseball Betting Lines
07/30/2008 -
Anaheim, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim acquired
first baseman Mark Teixeira from the Atlanta Braves for first baseman Casey
Kotchman and minor league pitcher Steve Marek on Tuesday.
The switch-hitting, 28-year-old Teixeira was batting .283 with 78 runs batted
in and 20 home runs in 103 games with Atlanta.
"It's a little bittersweet," the two-time Gold Glove winner said of the
trade. "I really enjoyed my time (in Atlanta.) I had a great year. I
love this team. I love this organization, this city. It's tough to
leave, but at the same time I have a great opportunity in Anaheim and I'm
looking forward to it."
Los Angeles General Manager Tony Reagins said the success of the trade will be
defined by how deep into the season the Angels are alive.
"Hopefully...we're playing deep in October. We're in it to win a world
championship," Reagins said. "We're not expecting him to come in and be the
savior for this organization. We're looking forward to him just doing what he
does."
"Right now my number one goal is to play great defense and drive in a bunch of
runs for the Angels," Teixeira said.
LA, which has an 11 1/2-game lead over the Texas Rangers in the American
League West and a major league-best record of 66-40 after Wednesday's win in
Boston, bulks up a lineup that includes Vladimir Guerrero, Torii Hunter
and Garret Anderson.
"I'm very excited, I told my teammates in Atlanta good luck, but at the same
time I have a chance to win a World Series here with the Angels," Teixeira
said. "I'm going to the best team in baseball...a World Series for me would
make this trade successful."
Both Guerrero and Teixeira's contracts expire this year. Reagins and Teixeira,
however, prefer to delay talks of re-signing Teixeira until the offseason.
"That's a bridge we'll cross when we get to it," Reagins said. "(But) I don't
view Mark Teixeira as a rental player."
Added Teixeira: "The big picture here is...the World Series. We can talk about
contracts in the offseason."
Teixeira could not confirm whether he will be in Wednesday's lineup for the
series finale at Boston, but he does plan on arriving in time to play if
Angels manager Mike Scioscia decides to use him.
The Braves played 12 of their interleague games against the four AL West
teams, including three in LA, which Teixeira believes will ease the
transition back to the junior league.
"I was very familiar with the AL West playing there for five years," said
Teixeira, who was with the Texas Rangers before being traded to Atlanta on
August 1, 2007.
Both Reagins and Teixeira are optimistic about LA's chances of winning a world
championship, but were also reluctant to tab the Angels as the AL's
frontrunner.
"I don't know the American League as well anymore. I'll say this, the Angels
have always been one of the best teams in the league," Teixeira said. "I'm not
going to make any predictions, I'm not going to say we're the team to beat."
Reagins said the move did not signify the Angels as the favorites, just that
they are committed to winning before adding that "teams will have to respect
what we do." He also added that the New York Yankees acquisition of outfielder
Xavier Nady and the trade rumors involving the Boston Red Sox did not factor
into the decision to upgrade their first baseman.
The 25-year-old Kotchman, whose contract also expires this year, is batting
.287 with 12 homers and was tied with Guerrero and Hunter for a team-high 54
RBI in 100 games played for LA.
"I'm just excited to go to Atlanta and play for Bobby Cox. At the same time,
my teammates here, to leave them, I'll be pulling for them," Kotchman said.
"Other than that, there's really not a whole I can say."
Marek, a 24-year-old right hander, has never played in a major league game. He
was 2-6 with a 3.66 ERA and three saves in 34 relief appearances for the
Double-A Arkansas Travelers.

Will Ohio State continue to run the table in College Football Week Four betting odds?
MySportsbook.com favors Buckeyes, Fighting Irish and Golden Bears in this weekend's big games.
NEW YORK, NY, Sept. 21 - My Sportsbook NCAA football fans: things are beginning to get really interesting on college football's national stage. Following last weekend's "Separation Saturday", which included five teams ranked in the top 15 dropping games, the BCS Championship picture is beginning to take shape - with Ohio State leading the charge. And, according to odds makers at MySportsbook.com, the number-one-ranked Buckeyes will continue their winning ways this weekend.
Revenge will be the name of the game in Columbus this Saturday, as Ohio State looks to even the score following last season's loss to Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions. Although Penn State are listed as 16.5 point underdogs, they are 11-10 all-time versus the Buckeyes. Paterno and the Lions, however, will have to shut down Heisman Trophy favorite Troy Smith who has thrown for 769 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
Speaking of revenge, Notre Dame will be out for some against Michigan State, following last year's 44 - 41 overtime loss to the Spartans in South Bend. The thirteenth-ranked Irish, listed as a 3-point favorite, will also be looking to avenge last Saturday's thrashing from the Michigan Wolverines. The Spartans, meanwhile, have won seven of the last nine match-ups against Notre Dame and are coming off an impressive 38-23 victory over Pittsburgh.
Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
