07/29/2008 -
Arlington, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Adrian Beltre hit two home runs including a
solo shot in the eighth that put the Mariners ahead for good, as Seattle
topped Texas 7-5, in the opener of a four-game series.
Beltre's home run in the first inning was a three-run shot while Bryan LaHair
was 2-for-3 with his first major league home run. Raul Ibanez also had two
hits, scoring twice with an RBI and a home run for Seattle, which won its
second in a row after snapping a seven game skid Sunday.
Sean Green (3-3) was handed the win for recording the final out in the
seventh. Brandon Morrow recorded his 10th save of the season with a scoreless
ninth.
Ian Kinsler had two doubles with two runs scored and an RBI while David Murphy
knocked in two runs. Milton Bradley added two hits and an RBI for Texas, which
dropped its second straight game by stranding 11 runners.
Frank Francisco (2-3) was dealt the loss, allowing one run on two hits over
two innings.
Texas also lost shortstop Michael Young to injury on Monday when he fractured
his right ring finger diving back to first on a pickoff attempt. Early
estimates have the All-Star out five-to-seven days.
Mariners starter Felix Hernandez pitched well through six innings, allowing
four runs -- three earned -- on six hits and four walks while striking out
six.
Rangers starter Scott Feldman allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk while
striking out four over six frames.
Beltre's second home run of the game, a monster shot to dead center off
Francisco, gave the Mariners a 6-5 lead and Ichiro Suzuki added a sacrifice
fly in the ninth for some breathing room.
Bradley started the ninth with a single off Morrow but Murphy grounded into a
double play. Morrow then issued a walk to Brandon Boggs before Chris Davis
ended the game by striking out.
Beltre staked Seattle to an early lead with a three-run, opposite-field home
run. Jeremy Reed walked and Ibanez singled prior to Beltre's at-bat.
Texas immediately cut the lead to one in the home half. Kinsler doubled to
left and scored on a Young single back through the middle. Young then suffered
the finger injury diving back to first before coming around to score on a
force out at second by Murphy with two away. He eventually left the game after
the second inning.
LaHair then got a hold of his first homer, driving the ball out to left-center
in the second.
Texas tied things up at 4-4 with a run in consecutive innings. Kinsler worked
a walk, moved to third on a Frank Catalanotto single back up the middle, and
crossed home on a Bradley force out at second.
Laird started the fourth with a walk and scored on a Kinsler double down the
left field line.
Seattle reclaimed the lead on Ibanez's leadoff homer in the sixth but Cesar
Jimenez gave up three consecutive singles to start the seventh for the M's
with Murphy's hit to right plating a run.

Big 12 Conference betting odds
Work left to do: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State
Texas joins Texas A&M and Kansas as locks after getting league win No. 11. Texas Tech greatly helped its own hopes and crippled OK State's with the two-point win Saturday. Is K-State the last reasonable hopeful? Could be an elimination match in Stillwater on Tuesday, at least for the Cowboys.
Work left to do:
Texas Tech [18-11 (7-7), RPI: 44, SOS: 12] A critical two-point win over OK State leaves the Red Raiders with Baylor and at Iowa State left. Get both and the Red Raiders likely are good to go. Get one and there could be some interesting comparisons with a K-State team that could finish two or three games "ahead" of them in the standings but doesn't have any of the quality wins Texas Tech has. Not a lot in nonconference play (against Arkansas in Little Rock being the best win, by far) to lean on.
Oklahoma State [18-9 (5-8), RPI: 50, SOS: 35] Still without a road win, the Cowboys now need to win two on the road just to get to .500 in conference play. It's hard to recall a team (OK, other than Clemson) falling so precipitously from lock status to almost certainly out of the NCAAs at this point. There are wins to be had in the last three, including a very big home game against K-State on Tuesday, but this team is reeling. Can you tell the pressure to win is getting to them with the way the final possession played out at Texas Tech? There are some good nonconference performances to lean on, specifically beating Missouri State and Syracuse on neutral floors and Pitt in OK City, but if the Pokes don't right this very, very soon, that won't be enough.
Kansas State [20-9 (9-5), RPI: 56, SOS: 96] It pays to be in the Big 12 North. The nine league wins are Colorado (twice), Missouri (twice), Iowa State (twice), Baylor, Nebraska and (a good one against) Texas. That helps explain the middling computer profile. The win over USC is nice, but the nonconference leaves a lot to be desired. The game at OK State in Stillwater on Tuesday is huge, as it could KO the Cowboys and leave K-State with a home date against Oklahoma with which to work.
