Brewers continue to struggle in Cincinnati
Baseball Betting Lines
08/05/2008 -
Cincinnati, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Bronson Arroyo threw six strong innings and
was a factor at the plate to help the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-3 win over the
Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of a three-game set at Great American Ball
Park.
Arroyo (10-8) gave up just one run on four hits with a pair of walks and six
strikeouts and also added a two-run double for the Reds, who had dropped eight
of nine coming into the game. Jay Bruce hit a two-run home run in the win.
Mike Cameron and Ryan Braun each hit solo home runs while Manny Parra (9-5)
got the loss as he gave up six runs on four hits with four walks and six
strikeouts for the struggling Brewers, who have dropped seven of their last
nine overall.
Milwaukee sits five games behind the Cubs for first place in the NL Central
and holds just a half-game lead on St. Louis for the NL Wild Card spot.
Tempers flared in the Milwaukee dugout in the seventh inning as Parra and
first baseman Prince Fielder got into an argument and Fielder then shoved the
pitcher twice before it was broken up.
After giving up a leadoff walk in the first, Parra retired the next 13 batters
that he faced, but got into trouble in the fifth.
Adam Dunn struck out to start the inning, but Jolbert Cabrera got the Reds'
first hit of the game with a bloop single to right. Consecutive walks to Bruce
and David Ross loaded the bases for Arroyo, who helped his cause with a double
to left that brought home two runs. After Jeff Keppinger grounded out to
third, Joey Votto punched a single to right that brought in two more runs
for a 4-0 lead.
The Brewers got a run back in the sixth as Corey Hart's single brought home
Braun to make it a 4-1 contest.
Cincinnati, though, made it a five-run game in the bottom of the sixth as
Cabrera worked a two-out walk and Bruce followed with an opposite-field home
run for a 6-1 lead.
Cameron led off the seventh with a line drive shot that just made it over the
wall in left to make it a 6-2 contest.
Braun hit his 30th home run of the season, a one-out, solo shot in the eighth,
to make it a 6-3 contest.
Francisco Cordero took the hill in the ninth to close out the game, but got
into a bit of trouble. After getting Jason Kendall to fly out, Ray Durham
worked a walk and Rickie Weeks singled. Cordero, though, struck out J.J. Hardy
and Braun to close out the contest for his 22nd save.
