Garza and Rays blank Jays
Baseball Betting Lines
07/29/2008 -
Toronto, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Matt Garza threw his first career shutout,
leading the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-0 win over Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays in the second of a three-game set.
Garza (9-6) scattered five hits, struck out five, and walked one. The 24-year-
old righthander threw 106 pitches -- 74 for strikes -- over nine frames to get
the struggling Rays offense off the hook on a night when it had to face one of
the best in game.
"I was just keeping them off-balance, in-and-out with the fastball, up-and-
down," said Garza. "I was able to locate my curveball, slider, and changeup,
which was helpful. I kept them uneasy and uncomfortable in the box."
Eric Hinske hit a solo homer and Evan Longoria added a two-run triple for the
Rays, who rebounded from a 3-1 loss in Monday's opener that had been their
ninth in 11 road games. With the win the Rays moved to two games in front of
the Red Sox for first place in the AL East. Boston lost to the Angels, 6-2, on
Tuesday.
Halladay (12-8) pitched well, but again found himself on the wrong end of a
duel with Garza. The Blue Jays ace gave up three runs on six hits in eight
innings, with eight strikeouts and three walks. Lyle Overbay had two hits for
Toronto, which had won six of seven entering play.
Halladay and Garza faced off in Tampa on July 19, a 6-4 Rays win in which
Garza departed after 7 2/3 shutout innings. All told, Garza has blanked
Toronto over 16 2/3 innings in two wins this month, and the Rays have handed
Halladay three of his eight losses this season.
"It's not always the hitters. You have to look at the opposing pitcher
sometimes," said Halladay. "It's just a matter of getting things going at the
right times, and when you have a pitcher whose on it's tough to do that."
Hinske led off the third with a fly ball to dead center that bounced off the
facade behind the fence and back onto the field. The umpires did not
initially rule it a home run, but the Jays outfielders didn't rush to the
ball, and Hinske sprinted around the bases for an apparent inside-the-park
home run.
Replays showed that the ball clearly made it over the fence, and was not an
inside-the-parker.
Garza, meanwhile, was the beneficiary of three double plays to keep his
shutout intact. Alex Rios, Scott Rolen, and Rod Barajas all grounded into
twin-killings that erased baserunners.
Longoria gave the Rays two insurance runs in the eighth when, with runners at
first and second and two outs, he lined a triple to right to put Tampa up by
three.
Garza, meanwhile, just kept dealing. Adam Lind doubled to right with two outs
in the eighth, but Brad Wilkerson grounded out to end that inning. The Rays
righty then tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to lock up the shutout.
Game Notes
Tampa improved to 22-28 on the road...The Rays also beat Halladay on April 23.
The Jays ace is 9-7 in his career against Tampa...Garza improved his woeful
road numbers. Entering play Tuesday he was 6-1 with a 2.10 earned run average
at Tropicana Field, but 2-5 with a 6.10 ERA in nine road starts...It was the
10th shutout of the season by the Rays pitching staff...Hinske's homer was the
100th of his career.

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets
With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship. Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92. After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points. Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1. Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years. With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed. UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern. Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier. OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak. Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four. It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta. But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.

LaDainian Tomlinson Favorite to be 2007 NFL MVP
With the first NFL preseason game less than two weeks away, it is time to start thinking about football once again at Sportsbook.com. Reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson is currently the 5-1 co-favorite to win the award again alongside Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning.
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after his all out assault on the record books last season. For those suffering from amnesia or were under a rock last football season, all L.T. did last season was set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns (28), total touchdowns (31) and total points scored (186) to go along with his 1815 rushing yards and 508 receiving yards. At 6-1, Tom Brady is next in line which isn’t surprising considering all of the firepower the Pats added over the off-season. With the addition of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker; it would be quite difficult for Brady’s numbers not to improve from last years 3529 yards and 24 touchdowns. There appears to be some decent value in Drew Bees at 10-1 considering he probably would have won the award last year if it wasn’t for L.T.’s record breaking season.
There is no reason to think the Saints will come back to earth this season and playing in a weak NFC, they should have as good a shot as any to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. At 15-1, Donovan McNabb could also be worth a look. Remember, many felt he was the MVP of the first half of the season before going down with a season ending injury. Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.
