Marcum, Barajas lead Blue Jays over struggling A's

Toronto, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Shaun Marcum had a no-hitter through five
innings and Rod Barajas hit a three-run home run, as the Toronto Blue Jays
topped the struggling Oakland Athletics, 5-1, in the third contest of a four-
game set.
Marcum (6-5) gave up one run on just three hits over seven innings, while
fanning seven and walking two en route to the win. Adam Lind had two of the
four hits for Toronto, which has won three straight and four of five.
Gio Gonzalez (0-1), whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Sacramento
earlier Wednesday, made his major league debut for the A's. But he took the
loss as he gave up four runs on four hits through six-plus innings of work.
Bobby Crosby homered for Oakland, which has dropped a season-high nine
straight contests.
"First inning, first pitch I was just hoping it would be a strike," Gonzalez
said. "After that, just tried to stay down in the strike zone."
The Blue Jays got on the board, 3-0, in the first inning. Alex Rios clubbed a
two-out double, Lyle Overbay drew a walk and Barajas cleared the table with a
long three-run homer to left field.
"He fell behind in the count with me," Barajas said. "I was able to just sit
on one pitch. He left it where I could do some damage and I took advantage of
it."
Crosby broke up Marcum's no-hit bid in the sixth inning with a leadoff home
run.
Marcum worked into and out of trouble in the seventh. The bases were loaded as
Frank Thomas and Carlos Gonzalez singled and Jack Cust drew a walk. Mark Ellis
then hit a grounder to shortstop John McDonald, who threw to Barajas to render
Thomas out at home. Jack Hannahan grounded into a double play to kill the
rally.
Toronto tacked on two more runs in the home half. Lind connected on a leadoff
single before Santiago Casilla was called in from the bullpen. Scott Rolen
then worked a walk and a wild pitch left both runners in scoring position.
Kevin Mench grounded out, but McDonald hit a slow roller back to Casilla. The
pitcher flipped the ball to catcher Kurt Suzuki, who couldn't apply the tag in
time, as all runners were safe to make it 4-1.
Marco Scutaro kept the rally going as he walked to load the bases, prior to
Joey Devine coming on in relief. Pinch-hitter Matt Stairs hit a grounder to
second base, plating Rolen to make it a four-run game, but McDonald was thrown
out at home to end the inning.
Game Notes
Oakland has been outscored 47-17 over its nine-game skid and is a major
league-worst 2-16 since the All-Star break...The teams combined for seven hits
throughout the game...The Athletics also optioned infielder Gregorio Petit to
Triple-A Sacramento and transferred infielder Eric Chavez from the 15-day
disabled list to the 60-day disabled list...Time of game was 2:15.

Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.
