Marlins rally in eighth to stun Mets

Baseball Betting Lines

07/29/2008 - Miami, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Dan Uggla and Cody Ross drove in the game-tying and go-ahead runs respectively, as the Marlins used a five-run eighth to climb within one game of the NL East leading Mets with a 7-3 win, in the opener of a three-game set from Dolphin Stadium.

John Baker homered and scored a pair of runs for the Marlins, while Ross went 2-for-4 and knocked in two. Robert Andino helped put the game out of reach with a two-run double in the eighth for Florida, which has won three of its last four. The Marlins also pulled to within a half-game of the Phillies who are nestled between the two clubs in second place.

Doug Waechter (3-2) benefited from Florida's big eighth for the win despite allowing the Mets to take the lead in the top half.

Fernando Tatis was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Damion Easley had two hits and an RBI for New York, which had won four of its last five entering the game.

Down 3-2, the Marlins refused to be outdone, putting together a rally to take the lead in the eighth. Joe Smith (1-3) started the frame by giving up a double to Josh Willingham and Uggla bounced a single to center to tie the game. Scott Schoeneweis entered and allowed a single to pinch-hitter Wes Helms with Uggla advancing to third. Ross stepped in and punched a single to right field plating the go-ahead run. Baker became the fifth straight Marlin batter to reach with a bunt single that squirted past Schoeneweis.

Two quick outs feigned the promise of keeping the game within reach as a wild pitch allowed Helms to score and pinch-hitter Andino ripped a two-run double to center for a 7-3 advantage.

Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco delivered an effective performance, surrendering just two runs on seven hits -- striking out eight without issuing a walk -- over six innings.

Mets starter John Maine left in the fifth inning with stiffness in his pitching shoulder and was not in line for a decision. Maine looked to be on his way to quality outing with a one-run outing on four hits and a walk while fanning six before the injury derailed him after 4 1/3 innings and 75 pitches.

The Mets jumped to an early lead in the second. Carlos Beltran beat out a slow roller up the third base line and scored when Tatis ripped a triple to deep center. Easley followed by lacing a single to center, plating Tatis.

Maine was cruising until the fifth when team trainers came out to examine the right-hander's pitching arm following a second-pitch fastball. Maine appeared to drop down with a sidearm motion on the pitch. After two warm-up tosses, Baker drove a changeup out to right-center for the Marlins first run. Maine proceeded to get Nolasco to fly out to right in a four-pitch at-bat but manager Jerry Manuel aired on the side of caution and removed his starter.

Carlos Muniz relieved Maine and worked around a Hanley Ramirez double to get out of the inning.

Florida knotted the score at 2-2 with a run in the sixth. After Uggla grounded into a double play, Mike Jacobs drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch from Muniz. Ross then lined a single to center plating Jacobs. Pedro Feliciano entered and got Baker looking at strike three to end the frame.

The Mets pulled ahead with a run in the seventh off Waechter. David Wright led off with a single then alertly took third on a soft grounder to first baseman Jacobs and the pitcher covering. The hustle paid off as Wright crossed home on a force out by Tatis two batters later.
