08/01/2008 -
Reno, NV (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Parker McLachlin fired a course-record tying, 10-
under 62 on Friday to take a four-stroke lead after two rounds of the Reno-
Tahoe Open.
McLachlin, who has just two top-10 finishes this season, completed 36 holes at
14-under-par 130. His best career finish on the PGA Tour is a tie for fifth,
which he has done twice.
After finishing 137th on the PGA Tour money list last year, McLachlin is only
partially exempt on tour this season.
Former Masters champion Larry Mize fired a six-under 66 to move into a share
of second place at 10-under-par 134. He was joined there by Brian Davis (67),
Nick Flanagan (65) and John Merrick (67).
Bob Estes and Harrison Frazar are one shot back at minus-nine.
Michelle Wie struggled on her second nine Friday en route to missing the cut
by nine shots. She stumbled to an eight-over 80 to finish at nine-over 153.
Wie started the round one stroke over the projected cut line and fell further
back with bogeys on 12 and 15. She managed to recoup one stroke with a birdie
at the 18th.
Around the turn, things started to fall apart for the 18-year-old. Wie flubbed
a chip on the par-five fourth, then bladed her next chip across the green.
Those two poor shots led to a double-bogey that left her at plus-four.
Wie found a greenside bunker off the tee at the par-three seventh and that led
to a bogey, but more trouble loomed at the par-four eighth where she stumbled
to a quintuple-bogey nine.
She did recovered with a birdie on the ninth, her last, to finish at plus-
nine.
"It was just two holes that really gave me the trouble," Wie said. "I felt
like I drove the ball very well on the back nine, unfortunately on the front
nine I didn't really hit any fairways. I didn't give myself any real birdie
opportunities. I did the best I could do and unfortunately I didn't perform as
well as I wanted to."
McLachlin got his round going with a birdie on the par-three second. He
dropped in back-to-back birdie efforts from the fourth to move to minus-seven.
After a pair of pars, McLachlin birdied the eighth and made it two in a row as
he also birdied the ninth.
McLachlin had a similar back nine. He ran off three consecutive birdies from
the par-five 11th to climb into the lead at 12-under.
"I was thinking about shooting 59 when I was on 14," McLachlin admitted. "I
had about a 10-footer there and thought if I birdie the last five, I'll shoot
59. That was the worst thing to think, and led to me making par there."
His hot stretch continued with as he birdied the 16th. McLachlin rolled in a
birdie try on the 17th to get to 10-under for his round and he matched the
course record thanks to a par at the last.
"I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens, then made a bunch of 10-
footers," McLachlin stated. "That was my best round on tour. I just told my
caddie I wanted to get to 15-under, but I just missed that putt on 18."
The cut line fell at even-par 144 with 71 players advancing to the weekend.
Joining Wie in missing the cut were Jay Williamson (146), Mark Brooks (147)
and Jeff Maggert (150).
