Vazquez's double lifts Rangers to wild win over Suzuki, M's

Baseball Betting Lines

07/30/2008 - Arlington, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ramon Vazquez belted a two-run, game- winning double in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Rangers over the Mariners 11-10 in a wild game that featured Ichiro Suzuki's 3,000th career hit, in the second installment of a four-game series.

Vazquez maintained the center of attention throughout the game with four hits, four RBI and three fielding errors while Marlon Byrd hit a three-run homer to go with three hits and four RBI. Milton Bradley and Gerald Laird added an RBI on three hits each as the Rangers snapped a two-game slide.

C.J. Wilson (1-2) blew his fourth save of the season in the ninth allowing the M's to take the lead on two runs and two hits but was served the win thanks to Vazquez's heroics.

Jose Lopez and Bryan LaHair hit solo home runs in the seventh as part of a five-run Seattle comeback and finished with three hits and three runs scored apiece.

Suzuki finished the game with two hits, including an RBI single, but his single to start the game was the real story as he notched his 3,000th hit. Suzuki played his first seven years in Japan's Pacific League, where he racked up 1,278 of his 3,001 hits in professional baseball.

J.J. Putz (2-4) took the loss and blew his fifth save of the season, allowing the Rangers two runs on three hits while recording only one out in the ninth. Seattle snapped a two-game winning streak following a dismal stretch of seven straight losses.

Starters Luis Mendoza and Carlos Silva started the fireworks by giving up six runs each in the early going. Texas' Mendoza fared somewhat better with nine hits allowed, lasting 5 1/3 innings but the M's Silva was pummeled on seven hits in just 2 1/3 innings.

Both teams had injuries to report as Seattle's Kenji Johjima left in the ninth with a left leg injury after he was plunked by Wilson on the knee while the Rangers' Bradley strained his left quadriceps and exited in the eighth.

Putz entered into a save situation in the ninth but gave up back-to-back singles to Byrd and Chris Davis. Laird then failed on a sacrifice bunt when Byrd was nabbed at third, but Vazquez atoned for his earlier blunders by driving a ball to the gap in right-center to plate both the tying and winning runs.

Texas started the scoring barrage to come in the second with an RBI double from Byrd, knocking in Bradley, who doubled to start the frame. Laird came through two batters later with an RBI single, scoring Byrd.

Texas then started the offense in earnest with a five-run third. The Rangers loaded them up right out of the gate before David Murphy plated a run with a fielder's choice. Byrd followed with a three-run homer to left, ending Silva's outing. Roy Corcoran entered an immediately gave up a single and a HBP setting up a Vazquez RBI single. Ian Kinsler grounded into a double play to end the frame.

Seattle began an impressive comeback with a three-run fourth. Two quick outs were followed by three straight singles to load the bases and Jamie Burke managed an infield single scoring one, while Vazquez recorded one of his three errors by throwing the ball wide of first, allowing a second run to score. Yuniesky Betancourt then plated a third run with a single to left.

A Bradley RBI double in the fourth and a Vazquez RBI single in the fifth filled the gap between Seattle's second three-run frame in the sixth. The M's loaded the bases on two singles and a HBP before Betancourt recorded a fly out and Mendoza was lifted for Jamey Wright. Suzuki notched an RBI single and Jeremy Reed reached on Kinsler's fielding error that scored two making it a 9-6 deficit for Seattle.

Lopez and LaHair hit back-to-back solo shots to start the seventh to cut the Texas lead to one.

Wilson then came on to close it in the ninth, but Lopez opened with a single and pinch-hitter Johjima was hit in the knee. Pitcher Jarrod Washburn came on to run for the hobbled Johjima before Miguel Cairo moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Burke then dribbled one to third where Vazquez, again, rifled an errant throw, this time down the right field line, clearing the bases and giving the M's their first lead of the game at 10-9.

Betancourt then failed to get down a bunt on a suicide squeeze and Burke, who moved to third on the error, was easily tagged out. Betancourt recorded a fly out to end the inning.
