Waters' excellent debut sends O's past Halos

08/06/2008 -
Anaheim, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chris Waters made his major-league debut a
memorable one, as the 27-year-old threw eight innings of one-hit scoreless
ball in Baltimore's 3-0 win over the LA Angels of Anaheim in the second
meeting of a three-game set.
Waters (1-0), who was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk before the game, walked
three and struck out three en route to silencing a powerful Angels lineup.
George Sherrill finished off the shutout in the ninth with his 31st save.
"Outstanding," O's manager Dave Trembley said of Waters' performance.
"Tremendous. He threw strikes. He looked like he'd been out there before. He
looked like he had tremendous poise. What a shot in the arm for us."
Luke Scott was 3-for-3 with a solo home run, while Nick Markakis had two hits,
a run scored and an RBI for the Orioles, who snapped a two-game slide.
Jon Garland (10-7), who had won six consecutive starts against the Orioles,
was touched for three runs on nine hits in seven innings of work for the
Angels, who have fallen in three of their last four.
The O's put up a pair of runs in the first. Brian Roberts singled to open the
game and scored on Markakis' double to right. Melvin Mora followed with a run-
scoring single to center, and the 2-0 lead held up behind the debut of Waters.
The only time the Angels seriously threatened was when the club put two
runners in scoring position in the third, but Erick Aybar grounded out to
short to end the inning.
Waters retired 14 of the last 15 hitters he faced.
"I was more nervous in the clubhouse before the game than on the mound,"
Waters said. "I just tried to focus on the mitt. I focused on pounding the
zone. It's a great feeling."
Scott made it a 3-0 game by turning on a 3-1 offering from Garland in the
seventh and relocating it over the right field wall.
Sherrill, who took the loss in the series opener on Monday, worked around a
leadoff single from Aybar to retire Mark Teixeira, Guerrero and Torii Hunter
in succession.
